V8 Supercars has made the decision to keep the revised soft tyre Quali + Race tyre allocation used at the Saturday of the SKYCITY Triple Crown Darwin.
The SuperSprint format had come under fire after drivers, teams and fans had complained about the lack of ‘racing’, mainly due to the tyres, or lack of them. At the last round in Darwin V8 Supercars introduced a revised tyre allocation and rule set which dictated that teams must run soft tyres on there cars for the second Qualifying and Race on the Saturday.
V8 Supercars today confirmed that it will run that revised set of rules for the remainder of the SuperSprint format weekends at Queensland Raceway, Sydney Motorsport Park and Pukekohe (NZ).
Phillip Island is also scheduled as a SuperSprint event although due to safety reasons V8 Supercars has elected not to run the soft tyre at the track.
Drivers have praised the decision after it created some action packed racing in Darwin.
“The soft tyre is a good thing, anytime we race on the soft tyre is a good thing, especially in a short race where there is very limited tyre degradation,”said Jason Bright to v8supercars.com.au.
The next round of the V8 Supercars Championship kicks off next week in Townsville for the Castrol EDGE Townsville 400. The event will feature a 200km race on Saturday and Sunday. You can catch all the events updates on V8 Superfans NZ’s FaceBook page.
