The first 2015 Bathurst wildcard has been announced tonight. Brothers Drew and Aaren Russell are set to tackle the mountain this October.
The wildcard entry will be raced using an Ex Garry Rodgers Motorsport Holden VF Commodore.
“It’ll be prepared by GRM and then we’ll run it on the weekend,” Aaren said.
“It’s not going to be a slow car, but we’re just going out there to do miles, complete the race, and just try and get some experience on the board.”
Aaren currently runs competes in the Dunlop Development series under the #58 Plus Fitness Ford FG Falcon and has been a regular in the series since 2010.
Brother, Drew Russell, was a regular in the Development series, but 2013 was his last full time season, also competing in a Ford FG Falcon.
It’s kind of a dream come true for both of us in our team,” Aaren said.
“We’ve worked so hard over the years to try and make this happen. To do it with our family team, to have my dad and all our other guys here, to share it with them will be incredible for us.”
The event will mark older brother, Drew’s, return to the drivers seat since 2013.
“It’s certainly going to be a major step up for me, being out of it for a little while now,” Drew said.
“We’ve got a test day before Bathurst and that should be enough for me to get my eye back in.”
The team will also run its DVS car, with Drew likely to do the majority of the driving in order for him to get back up to speed.
This year will be their first ever Bathurst 1000 race, however the pair has a wealth of experience competing at the circuit in the DVS series and Bathurst 12 Hour event.
The car they will be using will be no stranger to the mountain or close racing. Scott McLaughlins 2013 Commodore which scored 8th on its Bathurst debut will wear Plus Fitness colours and the #62. The choice of number paying homage to their fathers number which he competed under during his main game stint in the 90’s.
