Lawson steps up to Formula Ford

2016 Formula First Rookie of the Year, Liam Lawson, is set to take the next step in his Motorsport career as he moves on to the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship.

After a successful season in Formula First competing as the 2015 SpeedSport Scholarship winner, Lawson feels he is ready for the challenge of Formula Ford.

“I’m really looking forward to the new challenge that will be Formula Ford. I can’t wait to learn more and progress my skills to another level”

The Pukekohe teen recorded a win and four podiums in the highly competitive Formula First championship which is not something to be overlooked and he hopes to build on that success on his next step in his career.

“Last year was massive, winning the Scholarship and then getting a race win in Formula First which lead me on to winning the Rookie of the Year title. They were great achievements and I look forward to hopefully building on that success next season in Formula Ford.”

Lawson’s overall goal for Formula Ford is the ultimate one, but he plans to start small focusing on podiums and race wins in the early phases of his maiden season.

“My ultimate goal is to have a crack at the Championship, but I plan to start with scoring consistent podiums and race wins.”

As it is a brand new car and a brand new experience for Lawson he has made sure he will be prepared come November for the first round of the National Series.

“We will do as many test days as we can as well as a few rounds of the Manfeild Winter Series before heading down south for the South Island series in preparation for the National Series.”

“We hope to test this coming week which will be my first time in the car which is extremely exciting.”

“Obviously our first test isn’t about breaking lap records, I just want to get comfortable in the car and start learning everything I can”

Of course nothing would be possible without the help of many people and many sponsors, and Lawson is most thankful to those who have helped him continue racing.
“I’d like to thank Rotary Pukekohe for recently allowing me to come and talk to you about my racing, your support is greatly appreciated”

“Also a massive thanks to my personal sponsors Cyrus International Cargo, Counties Fitness, Formula Fit, Ryno Power, Alpha Customs, Dennis Martin, Grant McDonald and my Club 500 supporters. Without you guys, I wouldn’t be racing!”
