The Australian GT Championship has today confirmed that the series will compete in a two race “tour” of New Zealand to kick off the 2016 championship.
The New Zealand rounds of the championship will take place at the category owners (Tony Quinn) race tracks, Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell and his newly acquired track in Waikato, Hampton Downs. These events will be part of the 2016 endurance championship.
The series has seen a massive rise in spectator interest over the past few years. Ferrari’s, Aston Martin’s, Lamborghini’s and Mercedes Benz are no rarity in GT races, contributing to the massive growth of the series.
New Zealand has a ‘home team’ competing in the series this year racing Ferrari’s under the Trass Family Motorsport name. The team has been very competitive so far this year, taking all the pole positions at the first three rounds.
The addition of another NZ round will excite many fans, especially the North Islanders, as they will now be able to see the series around, what will be, an upgraded Hampton Downs track.
